What’s the worst thing flushed down your toilet? If you’re a parent, it may be hard to pick just one. From Hot Wheels to action figures, you could fill an island with these misfit toys. Sadly, toys aren’t the only common culprits. Wallets, pens and even dentures are other common items found in sewers around the world.
Unclogging a Toilet
Try using a plunger to free up the object just as you would if you were trying to normally unclog a toilet. If this doesn’t work, try to remove the toy with a closet auger (also known as a plumber’s snake). If you don’t have one on-hand, use a wire coat hanger unwound with a pair of pliers.
Still no luck? You may need to lift the toilet from the ground to push or pull out the object. Before you get started, make sure you have a new wax ring. Start by turning off the water supply, unscrewing the bolts of the toilet and disconnecting the water supply. Using two people, have one lift the toilet straight up the ground while the other tries to retrieve the object from the waste line. Once you are finished, return the toilet to its original position, using a new wax ring and re-fastening the bolts. Reconnect the water supply.
More Clogged Toilet Tips
- Manipulate the end of the auger to widen the hook so that it will be easier to grab the toy. While inserting the auger, push down on the cable while you crank.
- If you end up needing to lift the toilet, empty the bowl as much as possible by flushing the toilet after shutting off the water supply and holding the handle down as long as possible. Follow up by plunging out as much water as you can.
- If you’re having a hard time seeing what’s clogging the toilet, try using a mirror.
